Everything in excess is harmful: the importance of moderation

HealthNutrition

Now that the Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching, it is important to remember the word “moderation”. While it is true that during these dates commitments and meetings multiply, we must make a plan to enjoy this beautiful season without any excesses.

Eating with balance means not eating more than the amount of food our body needs. At the end of a meal, we should feel satisfied, but not full and uncomfortable. Eating with balance does not mean eliminating completely the foods we like but eating them selectively. It also has to do with balance and certain factors that will allow us to eat healthily.

Here are three practical tips that you can apply both in December and throughout the rest of the year:

1- Don’t think of certain foods as “forbidden”.

When you ban certain foods completely, you end up craving them more. Therefore, you feel regret when you give in and break your own rules. Instead of imposing such strict restrictions on yourself, reduce portion sizes and try to eat less of them.

2- Compare portions

Use visual comparisons to determine portions. One serving of meat, fish or chicken should be about the size of a deck of cards, while half a cup of mashed potatoes, rice or pasta is about the size of a light bulb.

3- Take your time

A crucial part of changing your diet is to think of food as a meal, rather than something mandatory in your daily schedule. It takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your stomach it’s full, so eating slowly and without distractions can help keep you from overeating.
